Investigating the Crystallization of Liquid Rock on Cooling

Pupils are inspired to learn about rocks and minerals on or below the earth's surface by studying the effect of temperature and time on the formation of crystals in rocks. The hot pots will enable pupils to conduct their investigations and model the formation of crystals in the classroom.

My pupils and their families expressed a keen desire to learn more about catastrophic events during our science night last week. Families and the community attended and observed pupils presentations. The hot pots will give pupils the opportunity to further their study of the curriculum.

The hot pots will allow pupils to mix magnesium sulfate crystals with water and watch as the solution is heated. They will predict and examine crystal sizes and shapes during the investigation.

Your help will ensure my pupils have the necessary materials they need to conduct the investigation and learn about this scientific process.
