Students must be challenged! In this senior AP English Literature class, students are halfway to their goal of taking the AP test in May. Their preparation will not be complete without reading Faulkner. In a school where 60% of students fall in the low income household bracket, our AP enrollment is growing and funding for books is an issue.

There's nothing better than a little Faulkner in February. Over 60% of our students come from low-income households where it is possible they will be the first in their family to go to college. The rigor of the Advanced Placement classes and their success on the test will not only prepare them for college, but in some cases give them college credit.

The students' exposure to As I Lay Dying will teach them the idiosyncrasies of this beloved American author who helped define the southern regional genre. Reading the book will help to teach them how to dissect style, stream of consciousness, and point of view.

Deep winter in the Midwest, with months to go before daffodils push through the frozen ground, is the perfect time to read about the south and be exposed to the Appalachian culture. In conveying the story of this family, Faulkner is able to combine humor and wit to the otherwise very challenged life the Bundren family leads Two class sets of As I Lay Dying will help me to provide my students with the resources they need to brave the AP English Literature exam.
