I teach approximately 100 African-American and Hispanic students in my high school general music and chorus classroom. Our school is in a very high-need, urban community with high crime and poverty, but our students overcome daily challenges to be at school every day. In my 4 years teaching at this school, I've gotten a number of hand drums through DonorsChoose which have allowed me to develop a hand-drumming curriculum. Students love it! And creating music is far more authentic that just reading about it and listening to it as we had to do when I first arrived at this school with no instruments. But as we drum with our hands, the question always comes up: "Where are those drums like they have on the movie 'Drumline'?" I smile and tell them I'm working on it. The first step to incorporating drumstick technique into my curriculum is to get drumsticks and rubber practice pads, which will allow students to practice without destroying our eardrums (and sanity). Therefore, we need the drumsticks, practice pads, and stands listed in this proposal. By donating to this proposal, you will empower my developing musicians to continue learning by doing, playing, creating, and composing. I constantly brag about the effects of good music education to other teachers and administrators--the focus required for success at learning to play an instrument is the focus that translates to higher test scores, higher grades, deeper learning, and success in college level studies.
