I teach Art at a K8 school in California. I almost 800 students from Pre-K - 8th grade. We are in a district that serves 70-75% free and reduced lunch.

California, as you may know, is in the middle of a "Budget Shortfall"... in the real world they call it bouncing checks, NSF, overdrawn, can't spend any more money... I digress. Getting supplies in general is tricky, but now it's even worse. Students are not as tech savvy as they should be for having as much technology at their fingers as they do. Getting students to see that computers are for more than MySpace and Youtube.

I like introducing students to technology that they might not otherwise see. Getting introduced, or shown, how things work is nothing compared to actually doing it. Being shown how to make a movie is one thing... doing it is another. Students in my upper grades are fascinated with anime and comics; describing to them that they are draw on a computer is hard to imagine. Showing them a video... again not so much with the understanding. But showing them and then letting them try it... and try it with the same thing they use in the real world... the same technology and the same programs as their favorite comic... then they get it, they are hooked.

I would love having 5 of these display tablets to use in my room, in the computer lab and loan to other teachers... but the reality of that is not practical. So I am asking for one, one to demonstrate and let the kids see, experience and try. I am looking for that, "Hey mom I got to draw a comic on the computer just like they do for (insert comic name here)... isn't that cool!"
