Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The vertebrae’s connected to the pelvis, the pelvis is connected to the patella, the patella is connected to the tibia, well, you know the rest, or maybe you don’t since you don’t recognize the Latin names of the bones. I am a special education teacher at lower income very culturally diverse school. I teach Cognitively Impaired students in a life skills curriculum. Most of my students don’t “look” any different than any typical teenager, but my students academic and social skills are much different. They are much lower functioning than the general education students. But, to me, their education is just as important as any other student in my high school.

I teach my students the bones of the body with the correct terminology for a couple of different reasons. One is so they understand if something happens to them and they need to see a doctor, they will understand “doctor talk.” A few years ago one of my students was hit by a car and separated her clavicle and scapula. When they took her in to emergency the doctors told her what she had done and asked if she understood. She said yes and pointed on her body where her injuries were and explained what they were going to do. Her parents weren’t at the hospital at the time, but they were so grateful that their child knew what was happening to her and that she was actually quite calm. They called me the next day to thank me for teaching their daughter some important medical information. My students learn best hands-on. The skeleton I have been using is only 18 inches tall and all the parts are very small. Plus, the arms and legs are not removable.

Part of my science curriculum is to teach students the basic bones of the body. My students learn 25 bones of the body in Latin. I have a very small skeleton that was given to me a long time ago, but it is very small and difficult to use. I am asking for a donation of a Life Size Human Skeleton Model that is very realistic and has removable bones to study more in-depth with my children. A life size model, would be easier to use since dexterity can be an issue for some of the children. A life size model is also more realistic to our own bodies and would be easier for them to grasp the concepts of how large or small some of our bones are in our bodies. My students are proud they can learn difficult things. They take pride in learning their bones in Latin. This skeleton would enhance their education and make the learning process more realistic.

Your help will make it possible for my students to understand the realistic view of a life size skeleton. The more realistic I can make things, the better for my children.
