Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Kindergarten is a year of wonder and new friends, of learning and growing. For many of the students in my class in a high poverty rural school in Northern California, letters and numbers, music and movement, painting, cutting, playdough, and big, beautiful books are brand new experiences. Providing everything they need to excel is not easy in these troubled times.

Stories and music are an integral part of the kindergarten experience. I read aloud every day, and music is a part of the daily schedule. But my students crave more--more stories, more books, more music. A listening center is the perfect place to accomplish this. But our decrepit old CD/cassette player has breathed its last, and needs to be replaced.

A CD/cassette player will let us continue to listen and move to Hap Palmer, Rafi, Greg and Steve, and other favorites during Music and Movement. Attached to a listening center, it will give the children the opportunity to listen to self selected stories, as they follow along in books, giving them precious experience with the written word. The listening center will also permit them to record their own reading on cassettes and listen to themselves read. Of course, music will also be available in the listening center, immersing the children in the rhythm and rhyme of the language. A simple CD/cassette player and listening center will provide a world of wonder for a class of eager kindergartners.

Your gift will help provide more than just a CD/cassette player to my students. It will also immerse them in the excitement of reading and the wonder of music, and allow them to select what they, themselves, want to listen to and enjoy. The next twelve years of their education will be built on this foundational year, and your donation will be an integral part of that foundation. Thank you in advance for your kindness and caring.
