Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A portly looking man dressed in an umpire uniform walks out to the batters box and takes his position behind the catcher. One of the players (our team) walks to the plate and gets ready for the first pitch. As the pitcher from the other team gets ready to throw the ball to home plate the umpire bellows out in a deep voice; STRIKE ONE, you have no bats to swing with. Then he yells STRIKE TWO, because you have no baseballs to throw when it’s your teams turn to pitch. And finally he takes a deep breath and motions to the crowd…STRIKE THREE, your out! So when our team looks at him and asks why? He says because your team has no baseball mitts or balls to use to field with. And you only have one baseball bat. Ok, OK, I know this is a different way to introduce to you the type of equipment were requesting. But I hope you enjoyed the story and can appreciate the humor. I’m trying to put together a baseball unit for my class.We currently have 10 gloves and would like to put together 8 more. So I am shopping the Goodwill and Thrift stores to seek out used ones, but am hoping to get 8 new ones from donors to supplement the set that I currently have. We need balls too. I’d like to get 10 soft throwing ragballs and 5 incrediballs. They are soft and won’t sting when the kids catch them. Our school is located in the heart of a large metropolitan city in Washington state. The setting is a culturally diverse school with students from over 20 countries. They speak over 15 different languages. We serve over 250 kids. The majority of our population has lived in the US less than 2 years. Many of them have been here for only a few months. And most of our kids have not been in a formal education setting before, let alone a PE class. So they are fortunate and will get to experience a quality physical education program at our school. The school’s goal is to provide as many traditional “American activities” for our students as possible. And one of the most traditional classes offered through the years has been PE. We’d like our kids to be introduced to such sports as football, soccer, weight training and fitness, volleyball, baseball, lacrosse, kickball, tennis, hacky-sack, gymnastics, juggling, badminton, parachute games and with your help many of these activities can be introduced to them if we can get donations and funding from you. Please help us, help our non American born students develop the passion for PE and lifetime fitness activities. Your donation will be greatly appreciated.
