I teach 2nd grade in an urban school district in Washington. Our students come from high-needs communities, with low socioeconomic backgrounds. For the most part, they have very little resources at home, but they love to learn!

Hearing about the earthquake disaster has reminded me as a teacher that we need to be prepared for emergencies at school. We have over 300 students in our building, and their safety needs to be our priority every day! Each student brings a personal baggie in September, filled with snacks, coloring books and pictures of family members. What we don't yet have is a radio for each classroom and a complete disaster preparedness bag.

We would like to supply each classroom with a battery-operated radio, which will give staff members a way to hear emergency instructions in the event that our power goes out in an earthquake or other emergency. We would also like to put one emergency disaster bag in each room in our school, to serve a classroom of students for 24 hours after an emergency occurs. These items will ensure that our students are taken care of in an emergency, until they are able to return home to their families.

Your gift of vital emergency supplies will ensure that our students are safe and taken care of in an emergency. We hope we'll never need to use these, but they will be so crucial if we do!
