Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach fourth grade at a wonderful school in a lower-middle class community in Northern California. We are a Title 1 school, and more than 50 percent of our students are English language learners. From our first science unit of the year, my students have been fascinated by the different environments and ecosystems we have studied in class. The ecosystem that has intrigued them the most is the coral reef ecosystem. I really feel that my students have learned a lot from reading books and magazines, and asking great questions which have led to interesting classroom discussions and discoveries. Through a DonorsChoose.org grant, I was lucky enough to take my class from last year to see the Disney Nature movie "Earth." Not only did my students LOVE the movie, they learned a lot from it. They were shocked and saddened to SEE the danger that many of our endangered animals are in, rather than just talk and read about as we had done in class. Before the movie, there was a preview for "Ocean," which was going to come out on Earth Day 2010. I am hoping to give my students this year the same chance to see what we have talked so much about in class. Your help would give my students an opportunity to watch a movie that I know they would learn from and love! It would be a great way to wrap up a year in which they (and I) have learned more about coral reef ecosystems than ever before. I also thought it would be a great reward for all the hard work my students have done and will do for the remainder of this year.
