Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Dear Inspiring Difference-Maker, Our kids are bright minds! They have so much promise and potential. Everyday our investment in them is paying great dividends and they are making substantial intellectual gains. The problem is that we never seem to have enough engaging books for them! We don't have a school library yet and we really need books to keep our students on the long and winding path to success. We are located in the South Bronx which is ground-zero for childhood poverty. Our students' and their families cannot afford to buy books even in great economic times. In this tough recession, things are even worse and our school budget has been cut for three consecutive years. Our good books are few and far between. This is why I have written this grant to you. We desperately need your help to get these awesome books and help our amazing students progress to higher reading levels. We use the Reader's Workshop model from Columbia Teacher's College. What that means is that each student is expected to read a book at his or her reading level. To accomplish this task we must at all times have a variety of interesting books at a multitude of reading levels. The books I have carefully chosen for this grant would help our classroom library to meet these goals. These books would be used by students on day one to improve their reading comprehension. We teach strategies for how to think deeper about a text you are reading. These strategies are profoundly effective if the book is right for you. These books will be right for many of our kids. They will be utilized from the moment they are received at our school for an hour a day of independent reading. Many students will also read the books every night at home for multiple hours. Our students have been begging me to get them interesting on-level books to read. The books I have selected for this grant involve characters who navigate the complex issues that surround segregation and race. "The Legend of Buddy Bush" and the "Return of Buddy Bush" by Shelia P. Moses are powerful stories about a man who is wrongly accused of whistling at a white woman in the segregated South. These books are intense stories of struggle and overcoming. My students also need the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid Four Book Set" by ever popular author Jeff Kinney. Please help us provide our students with the deeply moving ideas in these inspiring books! I have bought numerous books on my own but a teacher's salary doesn't give enough room for the kind of philanthropy that our kids desperately need. Please help us by providing these essential resources for our awesome students! We thank your for your continuing support for our cause. The betterment of our students is the betterment of our world. Thank you and god bless!
