“Scrabble Babble” is a dream of my students to help them practice terms. Spelling is difficult for many students in school, and mine are no exception to the rule. Recently we were discussing the different ways to study spelling and the game of Scrabble was mentioned. “Scrabble Babble” is a fun game that allows students to practice their spelling and terms. Often students lose points on quizzes and tests from spelling. This is a specified practice that targets their spelling difficulties prior to the quiz or test. They play the game of scrabble using the vocabulary they already know from the year. This is the “babble” portion of the game. Double points are given to terms that will be on the approaching test or quiz. This adds emphasis on the new terms. Students must not only use the word, but be able to define the term as well, thus checking their understanding not just visual recognition! As a middle school teacher in a school of more than 50% free or reduced lunch, funding projects has always been a difficult. Each day, I see over 150 students who range from grade 6 to 8. The students are in Beginning French, Intermediate French, French I (for high school credit), and Journalism. Each of these classes averages 30 students. Classes of this size are challenging, and of course fun. Small group projects add to the individualized education and feel of the classroom when the class size doesn’t permit. “Scrabble Babble” creates those small groups allowing me to float between groups to monitor their understanding and practice! These boards can also be used to target vocabulary and understanding for the state testing that occurs in the Spring. As many know, the focus on testing is incredible. We’re always looking for fun ways to raise those scores and “Scrabble Babble” is sure to be fun! Thank you so much for reading this! I can’t wait to have “Scrabble Babble” in my classroom!
