Num8ers: A Date With Reading!

My students need 30 copies of Rachel Ward's amazing new book "Num8ers".

I teach a remedial reading class to students in 9th grade at an urban school in a low socioeconomic community. My students call themselves "non-readers" who require high interest, well written, young adult literature to grab their attention and help them increase their reading ability.

My students require high interest novels. However, it is hard to find high interest novels that are also well written, that will increase their vocabulary and reading ability, as well as keep their interest and keep them thinking and questioning. However, Rachel Ward's novel "Num8ers" provides just that.

In this amazing book, it has the unique concept that the main character can see dates (numbers) in people's eyes. However, those numbers reveal the death date of the people in front of her. Terrifying, right? But it will grab the attention of my "non-readers" and get them reading! Reading this book will provide many opportunities to enhance my students' skills and prepare them for college. We are going to create our own "Num8ers" stories, identify literary elements, create our own "Num8er" characters, and enhance our critical thinking skills. Students will use discussion questions and prompts to communicate ideas with one another, all skills that are necessary for college.

You can make it possible that my students are exposed to an exciting, engaging novel that they will be sure to enjoy and remember. I want to get my students talking and I know that this novel will do just that. Thank you!
