Calculating The Cost Of College

My students need 35 scientific calculators to use for elaboration/exploration activities in class, without pulling out their cell phones.

I teach Biology, Environmental Science (Envi Sci), and AP Environmental Science (APES) at an urban school in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area.

For a variety of reasons, many of my students do not own scientific calculators, especially the juniors and seniors in my Envi Sci and APES classes. Some of them simply cannot afford them and the Math department has several class sets that students are able to use, so they do not purchase them. A lot of the seniors do not take Math in their senior year so they do not have a need to purchase them. Others feel that the calculator provided for them on their cell phones is sufficient. When I began teaching three years ago, I found a great clearance sale on basic calculators and purchased enough for lab groups (eight). However, now that I am teaching upper level Sciences, it is important for students to perform calculations on their own. When working on their own, students are held accountable for their work and are better able to acknowledge both their difficulties and successes. Being successful in performing calculations using a scientific calculator will be one less hurdle my students will have to jump when moving on to higher education.

Having a class set of scientific calculators will allow me to continue to assign higher-order thinking assignments, such as calculating percentages of populations in order to plot a population age structure graph. Our class sizes are relatively large, but if students are equipped with their own calculator, it allows for more opportunities for students to be engaged in their own work instead of allowing one or two students in a group to do all of the work. Increasing opportunities for students to think and work on their own will increase their self-worth and belief that they are capable of performing calculations that they previously would not attempt.

Your help will ensure that my students have an increased chance of ability and survival in college by developing invaluable skills that will remain with them after high school.
