I teach 747 students in a K-5 elementary school. We provide opportunities in technology and media; but we struggle to improve Reading scores, especially with our lower quartile students. This project would allow all classes to use poetry, rhythmic speech, syllables, and other uses of text to play on the hand drum while incorporating music reading at the same time. Preparation Students love drums. Period. If you ask a group of kids to choose an instrument that sounds like a distant river, a small bird, a baby's cry, they will say . . . "More DRUMS!"

With the exception of Music, Art, and PE (one "special" per day) our students' time is scheduled with structured academics and preparation for our state test. This is particularly true for the low-scoring kids. Yet, kids will learn almost any skill if they know their class will get to play it on a drum.

To begin with, we need a hand drum for each child. This is included in this project. These can be used for lessons in the Music room as well as performances for our parents. We need 20 hand drums, half 8" and half 10". Later on, we will probably want to add some larger drums to use onstage.

Your help will provide a high-energy and enjoyable way to improve Reading, Math, and Music skills. What's not to love?
