We consider ourselves lucky when it comes to the variety of activities we are able to offer our students. In order to participate in our programs, the student need only show interest – we have no fees for the students whatsoever. Even with recent cuts, we have developed and sustained a well-rounded instrumental music program. This program has grown from involving only students in grade 6 four years ago to now involving students in grades 6-10. Along with the typical need for more instruments to allow our program to grow, there are many instrumental accessories that we need in order to maintain our program. I am asking for a large variety of items, from mouthpieces for our wind players to mallets for the percussionists. We need these items in order to continue to add more players to our band. I am also asking for items that always need replenishing, such as reeds for the woodwinds and valve oil for the brass players. Everything on this list is something that we use regularly, and in most cases is something of which we have very little left. We are determined to uphold our program, and every one of these items will help us achieve this goal. Studies have shown that students who play instruments or study music in school have a better success rate at the collegiate level. As our program continues to grow, I hope that my students’ experiences in band not only provide them with college skills such as team building and problem solving, but I also hope to guide some through college auditions, allowing the opportunity to choose a career in music. I truly believe that having an experience with music in high school can lay a foundation for a student’s college career. During these difficult financial times, I am thankful that I am still able to provide an instrumental music program to students in an inner-city school. Please help support music in the schools by helping us maintain our instrumental programs. Who knows – may be the next virtuoso will be from this neighborhood!
