I believe students acquire scientific inquiry skills such as observation and prediction by practicing these skills in real world situations. As the media specialist in a K-5 Title I school serving over 600 students in a rural county, I purchase books and materials to support my school's curriculum and the recreational reading needs of my students. I would like to further support my school's science curriculum by creating an observation station in the media center.

Scientific inquiry skills are taught at all grade levels in my school. My students love science. They enjoy researching science related topics in the media center and checking out science books. Unfortunately, I am not able to purchase hands-on science materials to support scientific inquiry due to my limited media center budget.

I need butterfly larvae and several insect kits, including an ant farm kit and a lady bug kit, to set up a four-section scientific observation station in the media center. My students will observe insects and record their observations in a journal provided at each section of the observation station. Kindergarten students can draw what they observe; older students can write and illustrate their observations. I will provide the journals, pencils, and magnifying glasses for the students to use.

Your help with this project will ensure that students of all ages (K-5th grade) have an opportunity to practice scientific inquiry skills in an authentic situation.
