Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a high-need school in Bronx, NY, where kids LOVE to READ but do not have access or resources to purchase the books they love. They are often uninspired by the run-of-the-mill selections that have been in the school's book room for 20 years, and end up never opening the assigned book. Recently, however, we acquired a small set of books that appeal directly to teenagers -- in the genre of Young Adult Literature. The kids went crazy over the books! Their enthusiasm level skyrocketed and even kids who had previously been cutting class are now running to get there on time. They love the books and cannot seem to get enough.

The problem we've encountered in the past is that the students do not have access to the kinds of books they love to read. We have a limited or non-existent budget with which to purchase books at the school. The students do not have the resources to purchase books on their own, as in many other school districts across the country, so are left with the very limited selections from our school library.

Acquisition of new, fresh, teenage-targeted books will fuel the enthusiasm that is beginning to surface in the classroom. My students need 3 copies of 6 book titles, from "Lock and Key" to "The Burn Journals" for their free-choice library. It will continue to stoke the fires and inspire previously uninterested, disaffected students to attend class, read voraciously, participate in classroom discussions and complete written assignments.

You will make it possible for these students to continue to enjoy reading. It is my belief that when the students are given the opportunity to choose books independently, they begin to appreciate books that are considered to be "classic" literature. Reading books from the young adult literature genre builds reading comprehension skills and an overall love of reading that will last a lifetime.
