This spring the curtain will open on 65 talented student performers in the musical "A Year With Frog and Toad". I am proud to call myself a teacher and director of theatre arts at a K-5 visual and performing arts magnet school. Each week I take approximately 500 children on a theatrical journey. Many of the children that attend our school do not have the resources that would expose them to the arts in our community, and I feel very fortunate to play that role in their lives. This particular project will involve 65 fourth and fifth graders who have dedicated their time and energy to be a part of our after school performance ensemble.

In December, each member of the performance ensemble nervously auditioned for a part in our spring musical, "A Year With Frog and Toad". Now the parts have been distributed and each student has eagerly hopped into the rehearsal process. They are busy learning music, choreography, and memorizing their lines, but at the moment the stage is bare. We need help turning our blank canvas into a habitat fit for Frog, Toad, and the rest of their animal friends. Additionally, we need materials to make costumes that will breathe life into each character they are working so hard to create.

I have requested a variety of art materials that will allow me to involve the students in the design process. At our school we firmly believe students should play a vital role in each aspect of a production. It is important that students understand that a production is more than just the performers on the stage. By allowing the students to be hands-on with the scenery design, construction and costume creation, we are giving them ownership and pride in the entire production process.

Your help with this project will give these children a performance opportunity of a life time. The pride on their faces will be evident when the curtain reveals them on opening night. The skills they will learn and the memories they will create are something that will stay with them always.
