I teach kindergarten in a high-needs community. Many children in my class had never heard a story read to them before coming to kindergarten. As a result, they do not know how to listen to and comprehend a story. Children retain information better when they are actively participating in their learning. The puppets and felt characters will allow the students to act out the story, sequence the story, describe the main character(s), and improve their comprehension of the story.

Our class needs puppets and felt board characters to engage the students in the story and build their comprehension skills. Your donation will allow the students become involved with the story by participating in completing the story board (felt pieces) or interviewing the puppet.

The first administration of the Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI, given three times during the school year) recorded 19% of English speakers developed in comprehension. Our goal is 70% developed in comprehension by May. Your donation can help us meet our goal by getting children excited about stories. The puppets and felt story pictures will be used in whole group and small group instruction. The puppets will be used to introduce the text, ask comprehension questions, answer student-generated questions, sequence the story, and act out the story with students’ assistance. The teacher will also use the puppets in small group to facilitate guided reading groups and phonological awareness (the first step in reading). The felt pieces and boards will be used to engage the students by giving them a piece of the story. The students will construct the story as it is read. After reading, the students will use the pieces to retell, act out, or sequence the story. The pieces will also be used to work on vocabulary (ESL), descriptive words, rhyming, segmenting, and syllable counting.

Your donation of puppets and felt board characters with books will ensure that our students become excited about listening to and engaging in story time. Their active participation will improve their comprehension skills.
