My students need six skill reinforcement packs that will enable them to practice independently and in differentiated groups while guided reading is taking place.

January 2010: We've been at school for almost five months now and my students have not been guided in differentiated reading groups. I teach a lively third grade class of 23 7, 8 and 9 year olds in an impoverished city of NJ. My school is located in a high need community that would greatly benefit from quality education for its children.

Our school opened recently and was built for the purpose of relieving overcrowding at two other nearby schools. Nevertheless, the demand for its space forced the district to open its doors even though only few materials had arrived. My students found themselves without any books for weeks. Adhering to a balanced literacy curriculum, would mean starting guided reading. We need independent student activities the rest of the class can work on while my attention is focused on small group instruction.

We need six skill reinforcement packs that will enable my students to practice independently and in differentiated groups while guided reading is taking place. At the moment we are pressed for time. During this crucial time, the class must be engaged in meaningful and relevant activities. The sets I am requesting will reinforce skills and help my students become independent and accountable for their learning.

Your contribution may seem small, but it will make all the difference for the next couple of months (and for next year's third graders) as I work to increase my students' reading levels and foster a love for reading. If I want to accomplish this goal by the end of this school year, I must begin centers immediately. Creating effective centers can take years we don't have but your help will give us the push we need!
