Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the Art teacher at a small, urban, Title I public PreKindergarten-5 elementary school. My students live in housing projects across the street form the school. This year, due to severe budget cuts, the school does not have any funds allotted for Art supplies, even basic ones like paint. I always give my students only primary colors [red (+magenta), blue (+turquoise), yellow], plus black and white, to paint with, so that it becomes second nature to them to mix secondary colors. However, because paint was never ordered this year, we have run out of some colors. It’s impossible for children to learn about mixing colors if they don’t even have the primaries! My students are clamoring to paint – painting is one of their favorite activities in Art. I can’t wait to see the colorful paintings that they’ll create once the Art room is stocked with paint again! The work my students do in Art supports the Literacy, Science, Math and Social Studies work that they do in their classroom. In the Art room, they often illustrate the writing that they work on in their classrooms and they better understand their Social Studies curriculum by using their readings as inspiration for their artwork. In addition, paint-mixing experiments support their Science curriculum. Our Art room needs tempera paint in different colors so that students can continue to enrich their academics through the work that they do in Art. By donating paint to our school you will truly help provide a well-rounded education for our students.
