Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My school is home to children of extreme poverty. Most of them have never left the city and don't consider that an option for their future. My students live in the poorest congressional district in the country; approximately 99% receive free lunch and 85% live below the poverty line. Demographically speaking, 70% of our students are Hispanic (mostly from the Dominican Republic) and the remaining students are African/African American.

It is very difficult to convince some of my students to read. A lot of them are fed up and lost when it comes to choosing the right books. Every now and then, they find a book that they really enjoy. The only problem is, we don't have any others like it to help them learn to love reading.

All we really need are books my students are interested in. If I could only show them that reading is fun, with books they requested or will be interested in, then we would be able to inspire my students to read when they are bored. Many of their language barriers and low-skill sets can be remedied with exposure to new words and a love and practice for reading.

My students want more than anything to have something they want to read at their fingertips. Both my boys and girls have requested books from the "Harry Potter Series," "Sisters Grimm Series," and the "Bluford High Series." This donation would truly change my students' thoughts about reading, as well as improve their skills sets. Thank you so much for your generosity in our quest for a re-vamped classroom library.
