I am the school librarian at an high-risk urban high school. I teach 9-12 graders. I sponsor our school book club, which has grown over the last two and a half years. Many of our students come from poverty and have little or no reading material at home. School is the only place many have access to books.

I started a book club over two years ago. Because most of the students have limited resources, I allow them to keep the books they read. They have been reading a book a week for over two years! Now, due to budget cuts I have very limited funding to purchase books. Good reading habits and skills are critical to success in college and beyond.

I need books in order to sustain our book club. Not only do students in book club benefit from this project, students share their books with friends and family. We even have a book column in the school newspaper. It has been very rewarding to have students who aren't in book club come to the library to ask for books like the one a book club member loaned them. Continuing this project will help develop reading skills and help prepare students for the rigor of college.

Your help will make it possible for us to continue our book club and develop the reading skills of our students. The book club has become an important element in the students lives. They have been given the opportunity to share their love of reading by talking and writing about books throughout our school community. I feel that book club helps their reading skills as well as their communication skills. Skills that are imperative to success in college.
