Bringing Gettysburg to Life!

My students need 35 copies of the historical novel "The Killer Angels".

I teach eighth grade U.S. History in Texas. I have a population of advanced students who I am hoping to inspire with this project. I also feel that the state is always giving funds to students with special needs, and many times the advanced students get left unchallenged and bored with regular instruction.

I am always on the lookout for ways to help inspire my students and help them better understand the events that shaped our nation. Living in Texas, it is a challenge to get students excited about events occurring during the Civil War, like the Battle of Gettysburg. What I mean is, teachers in other states, such as Virginia, or Pennsylvania might have an easier time getting students to relate to topics such as the Civil War, since they are able to take trips to see these places first hand.

I believe that by having students read "The Killer Angels", they will better understand the events that occurred during this epic event in American History.

My hope is that by using this novel, I will be able to enrich the experience of my students and give them a greater appreciation for what we study, and perhaps a greater appreciation for all history.
