Reading For Real!

My students need a diverse set of 20 interesting books for our classroom library.

"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him." - Maya Angelou I teach at-risk sophomores in a rural area that has been hammered by the economic recession. Many of my students struggle academically because they are poor readers, and they are poor readers because they Hate to practice. They see reading as something impractical - even useless. I am thrilled that the administration at school has supported my decision to encourage "choice reading." Research shows that reading more leads to higher achievement in both reading and writing, and the gains continue throughout high school and into college - even beyond! The key to getting students to read more is connecting them with books they Want to read.

Through generous donations and lots of work, I've been able to create a classroom library with lots of interesting novels. My next goal is to include more "practical" books. I'd really like to have a variety of good non-fiction. That will help me reach some of my toughest cases - the ones who see reading as a waste of time.

But it's a lot harder to find engaging nonfiction for high school students. Most of the nonfiction books I've had donated or found at the used bookstore are written at a fairly low level, and I want to avoid having that section be the "dummy books."

By providing them with books they like that are challenging and interesting, you can help me change that. Help my students go from "dummy readers" to academically successful, college-bound scholars!
