Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach music grades 9-12 in a small urban high school. All of my classes are mixed grade level, which I love because the older students can help mentor the younger students! I teach music theory, composition, piano, and classical guitar. We are a high need district because the music and arts programs do not have a budget in my school.

A lot of my students have shown a great interest in the classical guitar, which is my principal instrument. The guitar is such a versatile instrument, you can play lots of different kinds of music on it like classical, rock, punk, folk, funk, and bachata. My students are very interested in bachata music, which is a type of Spanish music. They can't wait to come to my class to play their favorite songs! Our biggest obstacle is that we tend to break strings every now and again and with the 20 guitars that I have we are always in need of new strings and materials.

These materials would benefit all of my students this year and in the future. The acoustic and classical guitar strings are a material that we are always in need of because the strings do need to be changed about once a school year and sometimes they break. The folding music stands will be perfect to bring to our concerts! Depending on where we play we sometimes need to bring our own music stands and the folding stands are very easy to transport. The Beatles Guitar Chord songbook is a book that a lot of my students will enjoy! I recently showed a Beatles documentary and have students who want to learn their songs! I love to expose my students to different styles of music, that is why I requested an "Aventura" DVD and the "Interstella 5555" DVD. Aventura is the most popular bachata band. Bachata music is a very popular style of music in the Dominican Republic, a country that a lot of my students are from. The "Interstella 5555" DVD is an animated musical set to techno or "house" music.

You will make it possible for my students to continue to play the guitar during and after school! I teach a Beginning Guitar class and a Guitar Ensemble each once a week after school. The Guitar Ensemble is the more advanced group. Those students had to play in the Beginning Guitar class for one year before entering the Guitar Ensemble. All of the resources that I requested would help the Beginning Guitar class, the Guitar Ensemble, and all of my regular Music Theory classes during the school day. In the city that I work in it is really important for students to have high quality after school programs that will keep them safe in school during the after school hours and off the streets. With these materials servicing over 100 of my students during the school day and over 40 students after school we will be able to continue to play guitar for many more school years to come!
