Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in an inner city school in a high-need community. Most of my students are recent immigrants and second language learners. I also mainstream special education students.

Technology is advancing so rapidly and with the current budget cuts there is no funding for updating our school's technology. My students are becoming avid readers and want to take their Accelerated Reader reading tests, but are unable to because the computers do not support the websites they need to stay on top of their education. I have to bring my personal laptop in daily and they have to wait days to take their test because there is only 1 computer--mine. This creates a problem because the test should be taken immediately after they finish reading a book. The purpose of the reading program is to improve comprehension and increase the love of reading. My students are anxious to take their quizzes, but are disillusioned by the wait to take their quizzes.

Two mini laptops will help ease the problem of students having to wait days to take a quiz on a book they have just finished reading. With at least two mini laptops more students can take their quizzes, as well as complete more computer projects. This way their interest and love of reading becomes validated.

Your help will ensure that my students will take their Accelerated Reader quizzes in a timely manner and get immediate feedback on their comprehension with their new mini laptops. I will continue to bring in my laptop so they will have at least three compatible computers. They will be able to self-assess their own reading skills by monitoring their reading on the mini laptops. This will help them become more reflective and perhaps inspire a future writer or at the very least an accelerated avid reader.
