Ever ask yourself why are you here? Some of my students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades are wondering why they are here AGAIN.... That's right. They are repeating English 1,2,3,or 4 in the hopes that they will earn a high school diploma. At this point they need motivation. They lack direction and confidence. These students aren't aware of their own strengths. All they know is they are minorities who struggle with reading and writing. Many of their parents didn't earn diplomas and can't help them. Most of them admit that the only reason they come to school is for a meal and friends. They just don't know what they want out of life.

Roadtrip Nation has evolved into a PBS series, three books, an online community, and a student movement. They send people on the road who are interested in exploring the world outside their comfort zone, talking with individuals who chose to define their own road in life. This website has inspired my students to figure out what they want to do with their lives. It all started with four friends and one dilemma: "What do I want to do with my life?" Fresh out of college and unsure about the career paths in front of them, they were determined to expose themselves to more than just the traditional life roads. They hopped in an old RV, painted it green, and hit the road to talk with inspiring people from all walks of life to find out how they came to do what they love for a living.

My students are going to meet the tough California State Standards while they go on a self-exploration. They will follow the project outline of Roadtrip Nation and determine who they want to interview for mentorship and guidance. They will tape these interviews on the video cameras and share them with each other in a presentation of what they have learned on their personal roadtrip.

With your donation of two video cameras my students can capture the exact words and moment that they realized their own power. They can bring this experience interviewing their mentors back into the classroom to share with their peers.
