Culturally Relevant Choices

My students need a collection of 27 books that authentically represent their heritage and culture.

Please help me introduce the love of literature to my deserving students! My classroom consists of 20 diverse third graders with over 75% minority and low-income, low-performing students. Our funding for supplies was drastically reduced this year, and there is minimal funding available for new book purchases for our school library. Additionally, the current book selection available to our student body of over 700 children by Latin American or African American authors is virtually non-existent.

These children come from homes that are not currently represented in the curriculum adopted by our school district. To be able to share authentic representations of people of color with engaging literature, will expose them to our world of diverse nationalities, while demonstrating and instilling pride in their heritage and culture. Thus, I am asking for over 20 pieces of literature on various heritages and cultures.

My kids can connect to the world of literature as we celebrate the fabric and heritage of the cultural groups that fill our classrooms. I can extend their learning by providing an opportunity for them to compose their own stories regarding our cultural and colorful differences. Finally, effective instruction will take place when my kids feel validated and appreciated via authentic representation from a multicultural perspective.

In order to accomplish this, I really need a classroom library full of books that appeal especially to my diverse group. Your help is needed, your generosity appreciated! Thank you for thinking of us!
