Help a second year teacher help her students read fluently! I am a first grade teacher at a Title 1 at-risk school. We strive hard at improving test scores in the grades 3 to 5, and improving reading fluency in Kindergarten - 2nd grade. I am devoted and dedicated to making that happen. I want to help my students read fluently, which is imperative to learn.

My students face difficulties in reading fluency. I am very proud that my students are recognizing sounds and can read words on a page. However, it takes reading fluently to be able to comprehend what is read. I was given great advice at what can help students read fluently. A veteran teacher told me to allow students to record themselves reading, and allow them to play it back. The students love doing this, and they also love taking responsibility for their own learning. As a teacher, I love observing students' as they take an interest and responsibility in their learning. Even at a young age, they're valuing their education.

In order for my students to record themselves reading, I will need 5 cassette recorder/players. I plan to use these in a "center" during reading time. This particular center is called "The Listening Center". Students have been listening to stories on tape or CD. I would like to add or try other activities to prevent boredom, of listening to books on CD every time. I want to direct students to record themselves. I have spoken to teachers that do this, and they are confident it builds reading fluency! I am excited and I want to try this in my classroom with my first graders!
