I teach 6th and 7th grade reading at a new law and public policy magnet school. We have a unique partnership with one of the universities in Indiana. As our school puts a significant emphasis on college, I want to run my classroom as such. Even though I teach middle school, our students are already earning high school credit by taking the advanced courses we offer. In high school, our students will be taking college courses. This is a huge step in the right direction for public education. 92% of our students receive free or reduced lunch prices. We are honored to provide students at my school opportunities they wouldn't have had before attending our magnet school.

My students have been struggling with their reading. As they are still learning the strategies, what concerns me is that some are really refusing to buy into the fact that reading can be fun. When we discussed the fun in reading, I brought up some of my favorite places to read: a coffee shop with soft music and a warm cup of tea, curled up on my couch, or stretched out in my recliner. As we looked around the room, we realized the only furniture we have are student desks. As I think back about when I had to sit in those desks, I remember counting the minutes until I could get out of one. Then, it occurred to me that we needed some furniture in my room.

I want to turn part of my room, "The Book Nook," into a "coffee shop" atmosphere. I've acquired an area rug but want to add a couch, a couple of chairs, and some colored lights to really enable my students to enjoy reading in a comfortable atmosphere.

Your help will ensure that my students will have the extra incentive to find the fun in reading. It is absolutely necessary in their development as college-bound students to create a welcoming atmosphere in my classroom.
