Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"How can we paint mountains without any paint?" This was the question I was presented with last week as I guided my drama group to brainstorm ideas about a scenic background for our play. Our drama class is a group of 20 third grade students from a low income, high-need community. The class is divided into two groups "Performers" and "Behind the Scenes Creators." Through this division students who consider themselves to be shy and more introverted have an opportunity to participate in drama class. These students use their creativity to construct scenery, design costumes, and prepare our actors and actresses for performances. Performers on the other hand are responsible for using their talents to portray a story directly on the stage.

Although, my students are excited to perform and use their creativity on stage as well as behind the scenes, they are presented with many obstacles due to lack of materials. They are in great need of materials for scenery and stage hand work. Basic art materials such as bulletin board paper, tempera paints, and tape are not readily available to our students. In addition, our stage is in the gym and has no curtains or microphones. This makes it very difficult for audiences to here our actors and actresses during performances. Even though our performers practice projecting their voice every class it still becomes extremely difficult for our students to be heard in the huge gym. We also need costumes, props, and stage make-up for our performers to come to life on stage.

Providing our students with art supplies, costumes, and microphones would make an incredible difference to the quality of our work. Their success in drama will give them the motivation and confidence they need for school and for life's everyday challenges.

With your help you will make it possible for my students to believe in themselves and establish the courage they need to be part of such a wonderful collaboration.
