Moultrie's Conservation Imagination Station

My students need a compost bin and a rain barrel for the garden based portion of the project that promotes a sustainable future.

My goal is to create an experience that not only informs students of the issues that may affect our future, but teaches and empowers them to confront those challenges. I teach science to sixth graders in a coastal community.

Our school has a unique setting which needs to be taken advantage. The local farmer’s market is located on the school’s campus and I see this as a perfect opportunity for students to learn about sustainability by growing their own produce and developing a marketing plan for selling their produce at the market.

The project will start with students collecting Styrofoam trays in the cafeteria for one week and piling them in a mock landfill on school grounds. The week will be followed with a "Waste Free" week. I am hoping to get biodegradable trays for the week and get a compost bin for our students to dispose their food waste. Once I get the garden started, we will use the rain barrel and compost for the school's garden. Students will be learning so many aspects about being a sustainable community. This project has many learning opportunities for all students at our school.

This laboratory involves experiential and cooperative learning, and school gardens have long been advocated as effective learning tools by many educational philosophers and reformers. The garden serves as a foundation from which valuable lessons about the environment are learned. In doing so, it fosters and strengthens a community. The communal, environmental, and social discoveries made in growing a vegetable garden provide academic and personal challenges for middle school students. We must recognize that young people have concerns about their community, and it is important to respond to their concerns and support them. Investigating actual problems and making an effort to improve those situations engages students and motivates them. The process makes learning relevant to their lives. The MCIS will allow students to go through a process of investigation and their actions can instill optimism, rather than despair.
