Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach fourth grade in a working class and immigrant neighborhood. Most of my students are learning English as a second language, some of them have special needs, and all of them love to learn. Our Title I school is an important safe haven for my kids who are surrounded by poverty and gang activity.

Our school uses the Accelerated Reader program, which is a web-based program that determines a student's reading level and then allows students to take reading comprehension quizzes on books at their reading level. Our problem is that we don't have enough books to satisfy our hungry readers. My kids are particularly motivated by great authors, but sadly we have few of these books and our school library runs out of the popular titles. Many times when I have recommended books to my students, they've said, "I've read that--is there something else?"

We need something else! We want to create a collection of books by "great authors"--and what is greater at motivating kids than the Goosebumps stories by R.L. Stine? Kids love the Goosebumps books--they're funny, engrossing AND gross, and scary too. If we add a collection of Goosebumps and other books by R. L. Stine to our library as part of our "Great Authors" series, students will be able to enjoy the stories and take those Accelerated Reader quizzes that they love. We would like one book by R.L. Stine for every student in the classroom--28 books in all to give us the Goosebumps!

We love to read, and we love to have a good scare! With your generous donation to our classroom library, we'll be able to turn down the lights, poke our noses in a book, and scare us right into literacy. My students and I thank you!
