My Students: Have you ever spent a lifetime making an art project, cutting it just right, putting the parts together just right and having it break the first time you use it?! This is what happens when we use paper clocks to try and tell time. They break the first time. We need durable clocks for five-year olds.

I teach two sessions of kindergarten and have 51 students total. I have all the resource children for the entire kindergarten (6) and all the English Language learners for the entire kindergarten (8). Consequently they are all in the same afternoon class. That is over half of my 26 children. These children need a little extra help and a few more repetitions and this cannot happen with just paper copied clocks, they just don't hold up nor can they be manipulated again and again.

My Project: The hands-on clocks with give the children individual practice with clocks that can be used time and time again, year after year. The learning center will be up the entire week we are teaching time for an extra practice during the perfect teaching moment during small groups. The Grouchy Ladybug is a kindergarten favorite and the children will find the time on their hands-on clocks as we read the book. These are all necessary in giving my students the time and repetitions they need to learn the life-long skill of telling time.

My school is brand new this year and lacks many of the materials that established schools have, yet lacks the funds to provide even the basics in some areas. I believe that this is an important concept and have tried to use the most economical means necessary, but it just doesn't work. I need clocks that won't fall apart, I need centers that will inspire children to learn more and I need a book that can enjoyed out loud yet give hands-on practice. Then they will learn and understand. hide»

Dear Friends at the Eccles Foundation and Wells Fargo and Anonymous Donor,

You should have seen how excited my children were when I showed them the clocks with real moving hands. They just couldn't contain their enthusiasm. I even had one little boy that kept saying over an over, "I can't believe it, the hands turn every time. I just can't believe it!" Thank you so much for your support!

When I set up the time center I had four children that literally ran to the activity. They were just so excited. Then when it was time to switch activities, no one wanted to move, they just wanted to keep learning with the clocks and doing more advanced activities. Thank you again for inspiring children to learn.

When I read "The Grouchy Ladybug" to the children they just loved it and were very upset with the grouchy ladybug and his rude attitude. They would not have experienced this activity without the donation that you made to our little class. They would not have been able to explore time and have a great activity where they were able to draw each animal on a big clock and what time the grouchy ladybug talked to them without this grant.

The best news of all though, was when one of my special children looked at the clock on the wall and said, "It's eleven O'clock. I know that, because the big hand is on the twelve and the little hand is on the eleven!" I could have just picked him up and hugged him. Thanks to this grant, he had a clock he was able to set the time on again and again until he was able to grasp the concept of time. He will never forget this life skill and it was made possible by this grant.

With gratitude,
Mrs. Z.

Dearest Friends,

Thank you so much for the donation of student clocks, a "time" learning center and the book the "Grouchy Ladybug." These resources were desperately needed by our classroom. We are a brand new school this year and lack so many materials that we need. My class will now be able to learn to tell time! This is one of the most exciting yet fundamental concepts we teach in kindergarten. Clocks are everywhere and being able to tell time will open a whole new world to these little ones.

Thanks to you, my little ones have clocks that they can turn the hands on and not have them rip off! They can actually change the time again and again without ruining their paper clocks. Now, thanks to you, I have the materials to really make a difference in the lives of over 200 children this year and many more in the years to come. You and your generous donation have made it this all possible. Your generosity is truly appreciated by the entire class, the teacher and the entire school

With gratitude,
Mrs. Z.
