Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This science project is for the 2010 academic year. I am teaching a class of 23 first graders who all receive free lunch. Approximately 75% of my students speak English as a second language. I teach in California, in a low income community.

So often we see children who are discouraged and not interested in learning. This school year I would like to motivate my students with exciting gardening projects. I believe it is important for students to have a positive attitude towards learning. I also believe they should have fun, and be engaged in activities that will provide real life lessons in all subject areas.

I am writing this proposal hoping to receive gardening materials that we do not have at our school site. Materials such as, potting soil, seeds, children size tools, watering cans and a small wagon to transport the garden equipment. These few materials will provide immediate satisfaction for my students with endless opportunities for me to integrate concepts across the curriculum.

A few planting activities which will be incorporated are: comparing and contrasting seeds, estimation of plant growth, researching new plants, learning new vocabulary, and investigating plant parts and their basic needs for growth. More importantly, the students will learn about the responsibility of taking care of their school garden. I thank you for making it possible to add smiles to my students faces as they experience the joy of learning in our outside garden.
