I teach eighth grade English language arts in a small community in California. The community is very homogeneous and the children grow up somewhat removed from diversity in economic and racial groups.

In order to combat anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia, and discrimination in general, I teach a unit on the Holocaust. Students learn about the dark and deadly consequences of unchecked bigotry. In addition, the students visit a Holocaust museum. The study of this book will provided needed background before our field trip. We will read, discuss and assess the book in class, in essay writing, and in discussion.

"Anne Frank Remembered" is the story of the woman and her friends who stood up against Nazi hatred and harbored the Frank family and associates. By telling the story of Anne Frank from the "outside" of the secret Annex, students will read about a compelling role model. As a rescuer, Miep Gies stood up against the Nazi death machine. Students will learn about "rescuers" first hand and read the true and inspiring story of the people who came together to combat intolerance.

Your donation will help my students become better world citizens. It will provide a backdrop for discussions on how all people can stand up for what is right and best in our country and world.
