WANTED - Technology Specialists Need An HP Laptop

My students need a HP ProBook so that each group may have a Technology Specialist.

The urban Middle school where I teach is blessed with a diverse population. Unfortunately, most of my students have limited access to computers and other types of technology at home. It falls on the schools to try to prepare these young minds for a very high tech world. Each day, 120 students travel through my Language Arts classroom where I have only two outdated school issued computers and two recently donated HP notebook computers. While I am luckier than most teachers at my school who have no working computers in their classrooms, the limited number of computers at my students’ disposal is still not enough to close the gap between my students and their more affluent peers. It is our recent good fortune to have been gifted with two new HP Pro Books that have highlighted just how large the disparity is between these groups. As more and more students have been able to work on the computers, I have been able to see just how lacking most of them are in using simple programs like Microsoft Word. None of my students receive Computer Lab as an elective this year and with High School only a few months away for most of them, I began to panic. How could I get them the skills they need in such a short time with the very limited resources at my finger tips? I finally came up with a plan that I think will really benefit the majority of my students, and the best part is YOU can help! My classroom is arranged in five work stations to more easily facilitate group work and the Socratic Method of teaching. If I was able to get just one more HP Pro Book, I could bring the number of classroom computers up to five. I could then create the position of Technology Specialist for our group activities. Since all group roles are rotated, this would ensure that all students will be given an opportunity to work on the computers and let the others students tutor them when they got stuck. I've long been a Hewlett Packard customer and our new HP Pro Books did not disappoint! My students love them and can hardly believe that people they have never met care enough to donate them to help with their education. Adding another Pro Book will only bring our total number of computers to five, but I believe this is a step in the right direction. The possibilities for these tools are endless and the best part is that it can all begin with you. As most teachers will agree, it's vital for students to have paper and pencil knowledge in terms of writing. However, we can no longer ignore the fact that to make it in the future, we must also train our children to use the technology that is a part of everyday life. Help my students take a step towards their future.
