Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our 7th and 8th grade students live among the highest poverty levels in our state. Everyday they come to school ready to learn. As the Library Media Specialist on this public school campus I actively search for ways to support my students in fun and creative ways, bringing in new experiences.

Just recently the American Library Association promoted a "Gaming in the Library" Day for public libraries. I took the idea and ran with it. I advertised the upcoming day on our live broadcast to stir up student excitement. Our "Game" Day was scheduled for the 25 minutes the library opens before school starts. Wow, was there excitement! I had 112 students at the door waiting. Unfortunately I had nowhere near enough games for everyone to play and some very disappointed students.

In order to offer more "Game" days I am requesting a variety of board and card games, such as chess, checkers, Connect Four, Set game, to accommodate the tremendous turnout of excited students. The Washington Post (1/15, Williams) reports that according to experts, "there are so many benefits to playing board games. Games...have for years been thought to "help children with social interaction, taking turns, and learning to follow rules and to win and lose gracefully." This, in addition to the critical thinking skills and problem solving students must use while playing, makes games a viable learning tool.

While gaming is fun in and of itself, there are a number of state essential skills and curriculum goals that are met with the use of board games. As a Library Media Specialist I support my teachers in teaching their curriculum. Offering gaming in the library is one way I can support and strengthen literacy skills. Gaming and literacy go hand-in-hand. If you can’t read, you can’t play. Games come with instructions, menus, and more. There is positive social interaction with face-to-face discussion that students, especially adolescents, need time to practice. Your generous gift will make "Game Day in the Library" an exciting and regular part of our student's learning experience.
