Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

At my inner-city public high school, the drama department is thriving! Although we have no budget, over the years we've managed to acquire props and costumes through donations. We finally have enough props and costumes to do a full-scale musical!

Even as our department is growing, our space is not. We are forced to keep the props and costumes in a tiny room. The costumes and props are labeled and organized but are in stacks across the floor piled almost to the ceiling! With no money in our budget, there's no way to get proper storage compartments to keep our things nice so they can be used for this year's musical and for future generations of theater students.

We needed shelves and storage compartments to organize our growing theater closet. Without these storage facilities, what little pieces we've managed to acquire will become damaged, lost, or stolen. Luckily we have gotten the storage cabinets funded through this web site. Now all we need is the bins to put the materials in and to place on all of the new shelves!

Although my students may not go on to pursue music or theater, the New York theater scene is full of jobs for people in the arts including prop master, theater management, and set designers, to name a few. By putting together this props room, we will be preparing our students for New York theater jobs that are usually given to people imported from other places. By exposing these students to careers in theater, we will be encouraging them to pursue these careers in college. Already, one of my theater students is pursing a stage management degree in a City University of New York and he thanks me for giving him the opportunity to learn about management tasks through our theater program! Please help our students organize their props, costumes, and scenery with these storage cabinets.
