Build Literacy Through Comic Books!

My students need 25 comic books and graphic novels, from Batman to Maus.

Help build my students' literacy through comic books and graphic novels! I teach at a low-income, high-needs public high school, where a majority of our students are African American and qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Many of my ninth grade students claim to hate reading. So, I'm going to trick them into loving it! Comic books and graphic novels are colorful, exciting, and packed with action and fantasy--in other words, extremely accessible and appealing to adolescents, and especially to reluctant and struggling readers. However, not only are comic books fun and engaging, but they also help kids to build their literacy skills. When reading comics, kids learn to decode graphs, charts, and diagrams. They interpret the text and images through the use of context clues. Struggling readers especially benefit from the visual form of the comic book, which makes analyzing plot, character, and narrative structure much more manageable. Perhaps most importantly, though, reading comic books helps to build kids' stamina for reading and launches their interest in other genres of literature.

I need 25 copies of assorted comic books and graphic novels, ranging from "Batman" to "Maus," Art Spiegelman's story of his father's experience in the Holocaust. These comic books and graphic novels will be added to my classroom library for my students to check out and read independently.
