I teach Science and Language Arts to 4th grade students at a Gifted Center in VA. I utilize many hands on strategies to teach our knowledge seeking students! I like to make learning relevant and connect it to their daily lives.

Concerned about your local watershed? Our students are learning first hand how important it is to take care of our local watersheds. We have been raising Brook Trout from eggs since October. We have watched them grow in their various stages from tiny eggs, to fry, and then to parr. The students test the water parameters daily in the trout tank. The students have gained a better understanding of how difficult it is for these little creatures to survive in the wild because of pollution and other factors. This is a hands on learning experience the students are involved in EVERY day. It relates directly to their local watershed.

We can not keep the trout in our tank in the classroom forever. The trout need to be released in a fresh water stream that will support them. The closest location is 170 miles away. We would like to attend a festival in Waynesboro, VA, along with other trout classrooms, to release them. Our city buses will not travel that distance so we have to arrange for chartered buses. Imagine the opportunity this will provide for the students when they physically release the trout they have raised for months. What an opportunity!! This experience will be one they will never forget, and they will see first hand the importance of taking care of our watersheds.

With your help, my students will be able to participate in a life long learning activity that many would never be able to do otherwise. This is what learning is all about!! Thank you for considering my proposal.
