Using Film as a Critical Thinking Tool

My students need a widescreen LCD TV/DVD player combo to enhance our film study course for the upcoming semester.

As an English teacher in an low-income inner-city school, I find that my students lack some of the basic necessary skills to be successful in college. I have found that when I bring movies into the class, that students learn to use not only their note-taking skills, but their critical thinking skills as well. Both are important skills necessary in college and the work force. Students who go on to college need the note taking skills for survival. Critical thinking skills are essential for success in college and the work place. I can show a movie that they have seen on their own more than a few times and give them insight to thinking about a particular movie differently then they did before. All of them walk out with a new sense of the film. In the meantime, I have successfully infused new skills which requires them to think critically and take notes.

In order to ensure the success of this class, a dedicated television and DVD player are necessary. With only two televisions and DVD players available this sometimes proves to be an arduous task. I cannot monopolize the television everyday, as other teachers need them for instruction as well.

I believe that having a dedicated television and DVD player in my classes will ensure the success of the class for the students. It will lessen the stress of making sure that there is availability of a television and DVD player for class instruction.

I have already witnessed the success of using film to help students to think critically. Teaching seniors in the spring term is a challenge to say the least. Not only will your donation ensure the success of these classes, but that students will look forward to coming to class, to watch, discuss and write about different films they view.
