"Please Miss, can we read the WHOLE book this year?!" Class after class, this is all I continued to hear after reading a small excerpt from the book "Left to Tell" by Immaculee Ilibagiza. I teach tenth grade English at a poverty-stricken school in the Arkansas Delta. All students here receive free lunch, and several charities provide free uniforms for the many students who cannot afford school clothes. Teachers receive no supply stipend, and nearly all provide a constant flow of basic supplies such as pencils, pens, and paper to the students in our school. But we English teachers are faced with the additional task of supplying novels for our classrooms. In addition to stocking our own classroom library, any novel we choose to teach we must obtain on our own. Because of the extreme reaction I got from my students after reading only a short snippet of the story during our short story unit, the next book I have selected to read with my students is the memoir “Left to Tell” by Immaculee Ilibagiza. In her memoir, Immaculee shares the miraculous story of how she survived during the Rwanda genocide in 1994, when she and seven other Tutsi women huddled silently together in the cramped bathroom of a local pastor’s house for 91 days to escape the devastating killing spree of their Hutu friends and neighbors. In this captivating and inspiring book, Immaculee shows us how she found the courage and strength to survive this living nightmare, and teaches us about the importance of forgiveness and the meaning of truly unconditional love and understanding— even through our darkest hours. While my students are not living in the midst of a modern day Holocaust, they do live in a world where the struggles and challenges most people can only imagine are a day-to-day reality. In reading Immaculee’s real-life story about survival, courage, strength, and even forgiveness in the face of adversity, I believe my students will be inspired to find their own inner strength to tackle whatever life brings their way. Therefore, I am requesting a class set of 30 copies of the book. What is great about this book is that it really captivates students, drawing them in and teaching them that reading can be something they really enjoy, all the while allowing them to interact with issues that reach far beyond their doorstep, (which would be a new an exciting experience for my students, many of whom have never left their hometown, let alone their own state or country). This understanding will take them far, for if they want to be successful in a college setting, they must foster an appreciation and love for reading in general, and the ability to understand and interact with other cultures and current world issues. In our multi-cultural modern world, it is becoming even more important for our children to become informed global citizens in order to be successful in college and beyond. Please help my students to develop a love of reading this year. Your generosity will help empower these students to identify with literature, and will help hook them into becoming the culturally diverse young men and women they will need to be in order to thrive in a college setting. Thank you!
