Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We are a school in a financially strapped district. We have no music program for younger students. I am a third grade teacher and I teach music to all four of the third grade classes in our school.

Our school is in a community that is adjacent to a city with a world class symphony. Our students' musical experience is limited mostly to listening to hip-hop and rap. It is not unusual for a student, when listening to something like a piano, to guess that it is an electric guitar or maybe a trumpet. Most of them have never heard of the various instruments that would be found in an orchestra. In my class our students learn about music styles and expressions, musical instruments, and reading and composition. I prepare them for our annual trip to the symphony and I teach and direct the special 3rd Grade Musical Showcase that we do every year. This is quite a challenge without a way of actually accessing and listening to music.

Our boom box is broken! We could really use an mp3 player as well as a boom box that will dock an mp3 player. In the past we've been limited by my cd collection.

With an mp3 player and boom box/dock we could download and listen to a tremendous variety of music. The world of music that my students could be exposed to would be limitless!
