Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach high school biology in a high-need urban charter school, in a classroom with very little science or laboratory equipment.

As a part of any college preparatory science curriculum, students must have the opportunity to experience experiments. However, in an ill-equipped science room, my students are unable to perform as many experiments as is necessary. Often, I will do demonstrations in front of the class in place of experiments, or to explain a difficult concept. Unfortunately, with my largest class at 30 students, it is challenging for all students to see. A document camera in my classroom would allow me to project the demonstration on a large screen so all students could be engaged.

An additional advantage to having a document camera in my classroom would be the ability to project student work to show the class. Students could show their own work they have completed individually or in groups, so that others in the class can understand the material in a student friendly manner. I could also use this as a teaching tool, projecting examples of exemplary work, or modeling projects and editing.

Your help will truly help prepare my students to prepare for success in a college science class. Given the fact that my students come from a low-income, high-need community, they do not have access to the resources other students do, but they deserve every opportunity to succeed in high school, college, and beyond. This document camera will provide an unprecedented resource in my classroom to aid in my students in their academic achievements.
