Coming of Age Literature for Native American Students Part I

My students need 44 copies of "A Separate Peace" by John Knowles and the audio version of the book.

Ms. Schenk Crownpoint High School
Crownpoint, NM Grades 9-12

Native American students are not exposed to enough literature to prepare them for college! I teach senior English at a public high school where nearly every single student is Native American. The school is isolated in a very rural area, and the students have limited access to resources and opportunities outside of what the school provides. Unfortunately, there are few rigorous courses offered at the school, and the students do not have the option of taking an advanced placement course. The English department does not own enough copies of novels to allow the students to take the books that they are studying home to read. Thus, each novel taught in English class must be read during class time. With these restrictions, it is up to the teacher to try and design a curriculum involving novels that will both interest the students and challenge them at the same time. As their senior English teacher, I am in a unique position to help prepare my students for college. One of the ways that I prepare them is by teaching a variety of novels separated into meaningful units throughout the school year. One of the units I would like to teach is based on several “coming-of-age” novels, including A Separate Peace by John Knowles. The story moves between the point of view of an adolescent boy in school during World War II and his thoughts as he looks back from the standpoint of an adult. It will allow students to explore issues of friendship, betrayal, love, war, and peace. Having a class set of this book and the audio version will provide my students with a text that is meaningful to them and relevant to their lives. The opportunity to read a book that is both interesting and significant will foster an appreciation of reading within the students and hopefully cause them to continue to seek out books as a source of both knowledge and comfort. Your help will make it possible for these Native American students to realize the strength of a good book. It will give them an appropriately challenging resource that will help them build an appreciation for reading that will last long after the book is closed and as they move on to college-level coursework.
