Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Environmental issues affect everyone!! That's why I am so happy to be teaching AP Environmental Science (APES) to 30 11th and 12th graders. This is the first year that this class is being taught at our school/district. This is also one of only two AP science classes being offered at our site. We are hoping to add more AP science courses in the future. Our school is located in a semi-large suburban California city that is comprised of mostly middle to low income families. We have a strong staff and students that are a pleasure to work with on a day to day basis. Most, if not all of my students are college bound - their desire to gain college credit in high school supports this. I even have a student that was recently notified on his acceptance to Yale!! I feel honored to be their teacher.

We are currently in a portable classroom that is not geared for science labs. Fortunately, many environmental science labs can be done outside. The students love to go out of the class and do labs. Having this kit would work wonderfully with an outside lab! Because we are the first year APES class, all labs & lessons are being done for the first time. While I wish we had the funds to buy all that we really need to make our year the best it could be, our department just does not have the money to stretch for my class. We have biology, chemistry, physics, physical science and physiology classes to purchase supplies for also. Unfortunately, most districts do not understand that budgets for science departments extend much further than textbooks and supplemental materials, as in other content areas. Because of this, I simply cannot hoard funds for my one class of APES when there are so many other sections of science that need a lot of lab materials that must be replenished on an annual basis. Lastly, being in California poses an even more dire problem. Budget issues are expected to worsen for the next 2-3 years. This is not good news for the public school system.

As I stated earlier, this kit would work well as an outside lab. I could have students bring in home soil samples that we could compare with each other and with our school's soil. We could even report our findings to our administrators and/or district. Science is an amazing subject. While many students might struggle with mastering the concepts, they all enjoy and reap the rewards of having hands-on opportunities to apply what the textbook, notes and teacher has taught them. Lab time is the fun way of learning. My students relax, engage, teach and take away experiences that are often remembered many years later. I am constantly reminding my students that it is not always the results the matter (in a lab setting, many things can and do go wrong!), but the journey and experience of getting there. Labs are what I consider not just science lessons, but life lessons.

Being able to teach a subject such as Environmental Science has really opened my eyes, as well as my students, to what really matters. One of my students once stated that even though they have to learn log rhythms and how to write essays, being educated about environmental issues is most important because there is only one planet and that affects everyone. Your donation would help me get my class up and running, in the way it should be. While I know that it can take years to thoroughly build a class to where it needs to be, any type of help given would be greatly appreciated. With your help, my goal to prepare my students for college, life and the necessity of loving and caring for our beautiful blue planet would be greatly enhanced. Thank you so very much for your consideration.
