Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The words “teens” and “fitness” usually do not go well together in the same sentence. Well, at my school they do! Last year, I start a new fitness course to educate, encourage and promote fitness and nutrition on a regular basis. I teach at a low-income school where exercise and nutrition topics used to be ignored. Thanks to this new class, my students attitudes towards fitness are vastly changing.

I started this class from scratch – all I was given was the old empty wrestling room as a space to use. My students have stepped up and brought in their own weights, exercise videos, jump ropes, resistant bands, radios, etc…. All of their equipment has helped tremendously. Another great addition to this class would be some floor exercise mats.

To help my fitness class out, I am asking for some floor mats that will allow us to do abdominal routines and other fitness related exercises on the ground. Our classroom is very spacious and great for a fitness class. The one problem is the hard wood flooring. It makes it difficult and painful to do several of the exercises my students are enthusiastic about doing.

This fitness class is helping change students lives. Everyday I see students who are excited to burn calories and get in shape. Adding exercise mats to our classroom would help turn the old wrestling room into the new fitness room.
