Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My ELL students desperately need to improve their English skills to survive in school! I work in a very low-income elementary school with a high number of ELL (English Language Learners) students. Most of our students receive free lunch.

Many of our parents do not speak English so can not help their children learn the language. Most of our ELL students are fighting to learn English but are struggling to meet grade level standard while they do this. The biggest problem our ELL students face is not being able to read on grade level. Many receive intervention, but are still struggling.

I went to a training that showed us how iPods were being used to help ELL students in reading. The idea is that students are listening to their reading at their own pace then reread the story using the voice recorder. Then, they can listen to their recording for instant feedback. Many students who hear themselves read on their recording, want to rerecord to make it better...alas, improving their fluency and English skills. At other times, the students can use the iPods for flashcards and phonics related games to improve or fill in "gaps" in their learning.
